New data has found that the Hormonal IUD (52mg LNG) is an effective emergency contraceptive if inserted within 120 hours (five days) following unprotected intercourse [8].

Hormonal IUDs are safe for most female bodies Including; adolescent girls and women over 40 years. Most experts agree that if you are healthy and have a uterus, you are probably a good candidate for the IUD, and that this is true even if you are young, have never been pregnant or had children, have just had an abortion or a miscarriage (as long as you are not under treatment for an infection), have had an ectopic pregnancy, have previously had a pelvic inflammatory disease, have HIV with mild or no symptoms (on/off antiretrovirals), or are anemic. The Hormonal IUD contraceptive is a small plastic T-shaped device that’s put into a uterus (womb), and most people can’t tell it’s there. There is no packaging and nothing you need to do just before you have sex. In some rare cases, a partner might feel the IUD or its strings during penetrative sex, but a healthcare provider can easily trim the strings.

Get it and forget it. If you do not want to worry about remembering your contraceptive method, the IUD just may be for you. It is inserted once and lasts for between three to seven years, depending on the type (size and amount of levonorgestrel).
